CampusNews 021 Supporting the asnaf community in sabah R esponding to the university’s agenda to empower USIM@community and USIM@Rakan Borneo, USIM Congregation of Professor together with students from the Faculty of Leadership and Management and the Faculty of Dentistry carried out a humanitarian mission in Sibangkat Island, Semporna, Sabah starting on 29 December 2022 until January 2, 2023. This program is also carried out in collaboration with the Semporna Prihatin Organization, the Taqwa Foundation, the Alumni and Career Center, and the USIM Endowment and Zakat Center. Professor Dato’ Dr. Zulkiple Abdul Ghani, who led the delegation said that, it is the responsibility of the educators, as well as students and alumni to join in community engagement and knowledge transfer. He further explained that USIM sees the potential of alumni as the front line in helping the community. Through the concept of economic preaching, USIM alumni who have been successful in various economic and business sectors can also contribute and bring benefits to society by helping in the provision of basic education, especially for communities in rural areas. “Among the efforts to nurture the Asnaf community carried out by USIM alumni in Sabah is training teachers to teach Asnaf children in the islands around Sabah. As a result, they have started to know letters, basic count, read Iqra and memorize prayer readings”, he said. Specialist dentists from the Faculty of Dentistry that participated in this mission also did not miss the opportunity to provide free dental treatment services to the residents of Kampung Pulang Sibangkat, Maiga Island, and Kulapuan Island in collaboration with the Sabah State Health Department. Sulh – mediation skill certification combined expertise and experience of academic and syariah judiciary institutions U SIM and the Department of Syariah Judiciary Malaysia (JKSM) recently celebrated 99 participants of the Sulh-Mediation Skills Certificate in a ceremony held at the Movenpick Hotel & Convention Centre, KLIA. This Sulh-Mediation professional certification is the first in Malaysia, developed with expertise, skills and experience from academia and Shariah justice institutions. It is a pioneer in developing competence in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), especially in Islamic family conflicts in Malaysia. The certificate presentation and launch of Sulh Squad were officiated by the Honorable Senator Dato’ Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Na’im bin Haji Mokhtar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs). The Sulh Squad is an advocacy initiative of JKSM to spread Sulh literacy to the community by designing, planning, and implementing community programs in collaboration with Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Sulh’s literacy and advocacy approach aligns with the government’s aspirations in forming a civil society that includes sustainability, well- being, creativity, respect, confidence, and courtesy in building the future. This program has the potential to be developed into a higher- ranked professional certification because of its uniqueness, which emphasizes the aspect of dispute resolution based on the integration approach of Naqli and Aqli knowledge. It is also in line with the direction of the government in building a prosperous civil society and with its courtesy in building the future. With the commitment and synergy of both the USIM and JKSM, this certification program has received the attention of other government agencies and industries, such as the Armed Forces Religious Corps (KAGAT), the Religious and Counseling Division (BAKA) of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Marriage and Divorce Division of the State Islamic Religious Councils (MAIN), and the Turkish Embassy, which conducted a study on the implementation of mediation as well as the Shariah judicial institutions of Brunei and Indonesia.
