U SIM organized the Public University Risk Management Best Practice Sharing Seminar for the first time, attracting 140 participants from 20 public and private universities, including directors and risk management officers. The event took place recently at the Everly Hotel in Putrajaya. Among the participating universities were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UnisZA), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), Baitulmal Kuala Lumpur Professional College, and the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC). Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Sharifudin Md Shaarani, the Vice-Chancellor of USIM, emphasized the vital role of risk management in university management. He noted that understanding risk reduction, probability reduction, risk transfer, and risk avoidance is crucial for university planning, policies, and strategies. “Risk management plays a significant role in aiding university management and organizations in making informed decisions, especially in strategic planning, project management, and operational efficiency,” he said. Meanwhile, Mohd Asri Husain, Director of USIM’s Center for Shariah Compliance, Integrity, Risk Management, and Occupational Safety and Health (SCIROSH), stated that one of the main objectives of this seminar is to identify challenges in risk management at universities and develop solutions to strengthen the role of the Risk Management Center. The seminar, which took place from 28 to 29 August 2023, was inaugurated by Professor Dato’ Gs. Ts. Dr. Mohd Ekhwan Hj. Toriman, Chairman of the Public Universities Vice-Chancellors and Rectors Committee (JKNC/R), who also serves as the Vice-Chancellor of UKM. During the event, a session was held to present the letter establishing the Public University Risk Management Council. Shahrul Nizam Ahmad, Director of the Risk Management Center at UUM and Chairman of the Public University Risk Management Council Sponsor Committee, presented the letter to the Chairman of the Public Universities Vice-Chancellors and Rectors Committee.
