when their interlocutor shares a common first language. When students encounter complex or unfamiliar topics, they are more likely to use code-switching. If a subject is difficult to grasp in English alone, both teachers and students may shift to a more familiar language to ensure understanding. Educators may explain complicated concepts in the students’ native language to promote clarity and ease of learning. In this way, code-switching or code-mixing helps educators foster a more welcoming and inclusive classroom. While the use of code-switching in workplaces might be less explored in the Malaysian context compared to educational settings, it is similarly used as an important communication tool. A study by Ameer Syafiq Rhyme (2020) found that code-switching “is not a hindrance to workplace communication and is, in fact, effectively used by peers to smoothen exchanges which could have otherwise been problematic due to misunderstanding and miscomprehension of intended meanings of workplace tasks.” Workplace & identitty In some business organizationswhere English is predominantly used, workers sometimes switch to Malay to convey their local understandings of language and communication, and to create distinct social and cultural identities. In research conducted at a Malaysian-based Swedish multinational company with employees from diverse cultural backgrounds—including Swedish, Malay, Indian, and Chinese—it was found that code-switching occurs at all levels of business interactions. Superiors were observed switching to Malay (from English) to reduce social distance and create a sense of solidarity and inclusivity. Conclusion In conclusion, while we are all familiar, to some degree, with code-switching (and code- mixing), its role, function, and importance in our daily lives are sometimes overlooked. It helps us project our multifaceted identities and, at times, enables us to show solidarity with other ethnic groups, fostering a sense of inclusivity. This valuable practice should be celebrated as a tool that promotes inclusivity and unity in our beloved country, Malaysia. 21
