Ed TESL from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (2006), and B. Ed TESOL degree from the University of Warwick (2000). She pursued her post-doctoral study at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (2023). Her research interests include areas of Teaching English as a Second Language, literacy, instructional design, early childhood care and education, and other issues in education. ABSTRACT This article explores the potential revival of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Malaysia, specifically for teaching Mathematics and Science. It examines the historical context of the ETeMS programme, its discontinuation, and the ongoing debate surrounding EMI. The article highlights potential benefits of EMI, including improved English proficiency and increased access to global knowledge. However, it also acknowledges several challenges, such as the need for adequate teacher training and support for students with varying levels of English proficiency. The author emphasizes the importance of careful planning and implementation to ensure the successful reintegration of EMI in Malaysia. Introduction Prompted by a lecture in mid-July 2023 titled “Teaching in English Medium Instruction” by Prof. Jack C. Richards, a globally renowned expert in second and foreign language teaching, the author was inspired to write this article. The issue of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Malaysia has been a subject of heated debate and remains relevant today. This article re- examines the potential benefits and challenges of reviving EMI in Malaysia, considering the evolving educational landscape.
