39 Moderating the Risks of GAI with Islamic Ethics in Communication Islam provides principles that can help mitigate the risks associated with GAI in daily communication. The concept of wasatiyyah, or ‘doing everything in moderation,’ offers a balanced approach to harnessing the benefits of AI while managing its risks. This approach requires proactive governance, responsible development, and ongoing public discourse. These principles can be applied to mitigate the risks associated with GAI: Speak politely to women (Al-Baqarah 2:235): GAI systems should be designed to communicate respectfully, with dignity, and free from harassment, objectification, or gender bias. Speak assertively to hypocrites (An-Nisa 4:63): AI communication should firmly counter misinformation, disinformation, and propagandistic narratives while maintaining truthfulness and avoiding unethical tactics. Speak nobly to parents (Al-Israa 17:23): GAI should show reverence and sensitivity when interacting with elderly individuals or authority figures, avoiding disrespectful content. Speak pleasantly to the needy (Al-Israa’ 17:28): AI-generated communication aimed at underprivileged individuals should be empathetic and supportive, without exploiting their vulnerabilities. Speak gently to leaders (Taha 20:44): In interactions with those in positions of power, GAI should prioritize diplomacy and conflict resolution while upholding ethical principles. Speak truthfully in general (Al-Ahzaab 33:70): GAI systems must be designed and operated with integrity and truthfulness, avoiding any form of deception. Collaboration between developers and regulators should (1) incorporate diverse perspectives, including Islamic ethicists, into the development and governance processes, (2) implement
