Beliau merupakan presiden pengasas bagi beberapa pertubuhan perubatan seperti National Conjoined Board for Postgraduate Medical Education, ASEAN Society of Paediatric Surgeons pada tahun 2005 dan Malaysian Association of Paediatric Surgery. Beliau juga merupakan presiden pengasas dan pengerusi semasa bagi Malaysian Child Friendly Healthcare Association of Malaysia. Selain itu, beliau juga merupakan Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Kecil untuk Kepakaran Pembedahan Kanak-kanak di National Specialist Register, Profesor Pembedahan Pediatrik UKM dari tahun 2008 hingga 2018, Fellow di Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh dan Glasgow serta Fellow Academy of Medicine Malaysia. Kejayaan terbesar dalam profesion pembedahannya ialah beliau antara rakyat Malaysia pertama yang terlibat dan turut mengetuai pasukan pembedahan yang berjaya memisahkan sepasang kembar siam di Hospital Kuala Lumpur pada 17 Julai 1988. Sejak itu, beliau telah terlibat dalam 10 pembedahan pemisahan dengan 15 orang pesakit yang masih hidup hingga kini. Selain itu, beliau juga menubuhkan dan mengetuai kemudahan dan perkhidmatan Burn Care pertama yang komprehensif di Malaysia pada bulan September 1988. Berdasarkan sumbangannya kepada bidang pembedahan di Malaysia, Profesor Dato’ Dr. Mahmud dianugerahkan Orator Ismail AM ke-39 di College of Surgeons Malaysia pada tahun 2012. Pada tahun 2009, beliau menyertai Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) sebagai Profesor Pembedahan. Pengalaman dan sumbangannya yang tidak ternilai terhadap negara amat luar biasa dan baginya usia bukanlah faktor penentu sebuah kejayaan. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mahmud Bin Mohd Nor was born in 21 st September 1945 in Sitiawan, Perak. He received his primary and secondary education at Malay College Kuala Kangsar from 1955-1964. Subsequently, he furthered his studies in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. He graduated in 1970 and continued to serve the nation as a Medical Doctor in the Ministry of Health Malaysia at Hospital Teluk Anson (Intan) and Hospital Taiping for two years. He was then seconded to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to help in the establishment of the medical faculty there. He pursued his career in surgery and obtained Primary FRACS (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons) in July 1974 and FRCSEd (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) in May 1975. His academic career started here, whereby, he was the founding Head of Surgery Department, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1976 and was the Professor of Surgery. He became Dean of the Medical Faculty at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 1984 to 1990. He was responsible for developing the country’s first postgraduate programme in surgery in 1981. His passion in Medical Education has enabled him to obtain a Fulbright Scholarship in 1988 to study the Medical Education system in various medical schools in the United States. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mahmud initiated the establishment of the National Conjoined Board for Postgraduate Medical Education and was the first Chairman. He was the founding President of ASEAN Society of Paediatric Surgeons in 2005 and the founding President of the Malaysian Association of Paediatric Surgery and Founding President and current President of the Malaysian Child friendly Healthcare Association of Malaysia. He was also the Chairman of the Specialist Subcommittee for Paediatric surgery of the National Specialist Register. He was also the Adjunct Professor of Paediatric Surgery Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) from 2008 to 2018. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia.
