E-Prosiding Persidangan Serantau Manasik Haji 2025 (MANASIK2025)
MANASIK2025 Putrajaya, Malaysia, 7-8 Oktober 2025 661 at the airport. We assisted in ensuring that the arrival process went smoothly, starting from coordinating with the travel agency and muassasah to arranging transportation to the hotel. Upon arrival at the hotel, we continued our role in providing services to the pilgrims, particularly during the check-in process, room allocation, and the distribution of luggage and other belongings. We also ensured the comfort of the pilgrims during their stay, including answering various questions such as, “How far is the hotel from the Prophet’s Mosque?” or “How can I contact my family in Indonesia?”, and other similar inquiries. The experience gained during the internship also included carrying out technical tasks in the field. One of these activities was providing guidance and assistance to pilgrims during visits to several historical sites in the city of Madinah. In this activity, the author served as both a muthawwif and assistant tour leader. The tasks included helping to convey information as well as adding explanations regarding the historical and spiritual values of the sites visited. The role of a muthawwif is not limited to that of a travel guide alone, but also encompasses the role of a spiritual educator who guides pilgrims to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the values of worship (Basri, 2020). Thus, involvement in this activity provided direct experience in accompanying pilgrims while deepening understanding of the educational aspects in pilgrimage guidance services. In addition, we were also involved in assisting elderly pilgrims during local visits (ziarah dalam) in Madinah. We helped by pushing wheelchairs, answering questions, and ensuring the comfort of elderly pilgrims during the local pilgrimage within the Prophet’s Mosque (Amin, Management of Umrah Services for Elderly Pilgrims (Case Study at PPIU Dewangga Salatiga), Thesis, UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta, 2024). During the internship program, we also had the opportunity to learn and develop skills as professional muthawwif. The assistance tasks were carried out comprehensively, starting from the hotel to the miqat, then accompanying pilgrims in performing the entire series of Umrah rituals, including tawaf, sa’i, and tahallul. In general, the entire worship process was carried out well and smoothly. Although in practice we encountered several technical or situational challenges, these obstacles were effectively resolved through teamwork, good communication, and coordination with the relevant parties. As expressed by SM, one of the Umrah pilgrims: “After completing tawaf, my group and I prepared to perform sa’i. At that moment, some of us wanted to go to the restroom first, while others chose to continue with sa’i so the worship could be completed quickly. Alhamdulillah, the muthawwif who guided us was very patient and attentive. He invited us to discuss and offered a fair solution, namely accompanying the pilgrims who wanted to go to the restroom, while the others waited at the entrance of the mas’a. Thanks to the wisdom and good time management of the muthawwif, we were able to continue the Umrah rituals in an orderly, comfortable manner, and still stay together.” (Source: Siti Mubasarah, January 24, 2025, Madinah al- Munawwarah). This experience had a significant impact on strengthening interpersonal communication competence, spiritual responsibility, and accuracy in decision-making.
