69 Common Orthodontic Misinformation on Social Media A common concern among prospective orthodontic patients is the belief that orthodontic treatment is extremely painful. However, multiple studies have reported that patients experience discomfort and not excruciating pain. This discomfort or slight soreness is expected during the initial placement of braces or aligners and sometimes during the adjustment appointments. The discomfort typically subsides within a few days. Patients may take over-the-counter painkillers (Panadol) should the discomfort disrupt daily activities. While malocclusions may appear similar in different individuals, each case requires a thorough assessment by an orthodontist. Another common misconception is that the same orthodontic treatment plan suits everyone. During an orthodontic assessment appointment, a patient’s age, growth potential, medical and social history, and motivation are considered. A comprehensive clinical examination assesses tooth shape, gum health, and oral hygiene in determining the feasibility of treatment. If a patient presents with uncontrolled diabetes, poor oral hygiene, or extensive dental caries, these underlying issues must be addressed before orthodontic intervention. In such cases, the primary goal is to restore dental health before considering tooth alignment, ensuring a stable foundation for successful treatment outcomes. Islam warns against following blindly without proper understanding, as mentioned in the Qur'an: "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—about all those [one] will be questioned." (Surah Al-Isra 17:36). Seeking professional advice is essential to ensure safety and proper care. The convenience of ordering aligners online and receiving treatment through the mail may seem appealing, but such an approach carries significant risks. Mail-order aligners often follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Therefore, it does not provide the same results as in-person clinical evaluation, which is essential for an accurate diagnosis and customized treatment plan. Potential complications such as incorrect tooth movement, bite misalignment, and periodontal damage may arise without professional supervision. In contrast, in-person consultations with an orthodontic specialist ensure that treatment is tailored to the patient’s specific needs and that progress is closely monitored. Many social media users assume that all orthodontic treatments are interchangeable and that clear aligners can replace braces in every case. However, orthodontic treatment is highly individualized. The effectiveness of braces or aligners depends on factors such as case complexity, jaw alignment, and patient compliance. Misrepresenting aligner capabilities on social media can lead to unrealistic expectations and treatment failure. Another common misperception is that individuals may be too old for orthodontic treatment, and their age is a limiting factor. If an individual has a healthy oral condition, the orthodontist will propose a plan and consider the age factor and other limitations. Older patients, too, may benefit from orthodontic care, depending on their case.
