The nature of digital interaction tends to reward brevity and image over substance. Social media platforms are designed to promote visually engaging and emotionally stimulating content, often leading to performative communication rather than authentic self-expression. This shallow engagement limits the depth of human connection and contributes to social fatigue and burnout. Digital platforms increasingly rely on algorithms to personalise user experiences. While this enhances user engagement by showing content aligned with personal preferences, it can also create echo chambers that reinforce existing beliefs and limit exposure to diverse viewpoints. This fragmentation reduces the opportunity for open dialogue and mutual understanding. When people primarily engage with those with similar ideologies or interests, public discourse becomes polarised, and opportunities for consensus and empathy diminish.
