Gradual Secularization of Consciousness To explain the above, the separation between worldly and godly consciousness is realizable when the mind begins to understand the reality through the worldly- spiritual dualistic framework. This cognitive dualism fragments consciousness, making both worldly and godly seemingly unrelated and allowing the isolation of the former from the latter. As the conditions of secular consciousness intensify, God-consciousness wanes and is replaced by a worldly-centred mindedness. This diminishing of divine consciousness is essentially the secularization of cognition or mind, which occurs following the perception of reality through the dualistic framework. God-consciousness recedes, and secular consciousness, one that empties the worldly from divinity, comes to dominate. Such circumstance relegates the religious and godly outlook to a secondary position. The cumulative psychosocial secularizing forces provides a conducive environment for secular consciousness to flourish, weakening God-consciousness in the process. This widens the perceived gap between the worldly and spiritual, making their separation seem more axiomatic and self-evident. Ultimately, the Islamic integrative and holistic consciousness is eroded by secularized consciousness. ( to be continued ) MAJALAH AL HIKMAH | 42
