35 FEM Newsletter | June 2023 Introduction Volunteering activities refer to any unpaid work or services that are provided by individuals or groups to support a cause or organization. Volunteering activities can have a positive impact on both the individuals who volunteer and the communities they serve. Volunteering can provide personal fulfilment, skill development, and sense of purpose, while also contributing to the greater good. This can involve donating time, skills, and expertise to support various community, humanitarian, or environmental causes. Volunteering can take many different forms, including: 1. Service-based volunteering : Volunteering in direct service to others, such as volunteering at a food bank, serving meals at a homeless shelter, or helping to build homes for people in need. 2. Skill-based volunteering : Volunteering based on specialized skills or expertise, suchasproviding legal advice, mentoring young people, or using technical skills to help with a community project. 3. Advocacy and awareness volunteering : Volunteering to raise awareness and advocate for a particular cause or issue, such as participating in a protest, lobbying for policy changes, or raising funds for a charitable organization. Volunteering is also encouraged in Islam and is considered an important act of worship that is rewarded by Allah. In Islam, the concept of volunteering is closely related to the idea of charity or “ sadaqah ,” which aims to seek Allah’s pleasure and earning rewards in the hereafter.
