27 FEM Newsletter | June 2023 Introduction Appropriate technology is a concept that concern with development and use of technology that fits with the contexts of the targeted users and benefitted them. Generally, appropriate technology is characterized as simple and friendly, manageable, highly adaptable, affordable, and small-scale that fit with the needs of the users (Basu & Weil, 1998; Patnaik & Bhowmick, 2019; Shin et al., 2019; Willoughby, 1990). All appropriate technologies must successfully go through the innovation process, from the phase of development to adoption and use and finally to the phase of routinization, in which the users gain the full benefit of the technology. Appropriate technology can be self-developed by users or developed by institutions and transferred to the users. In the case of the latter, the technology will go the process of technology transfer, where the transferor (institution) develops and delivers the technology to the transferee (user). Technology is successfully transferred when it is adopted and utilized by the transferee or users and become routinised or embedded in their work or in their daily lives. In developing appropriate technology, usually the technology developer leverages on available resources and ensures that the technology that is developed suits the needs and situation of the targeted community. Such a pursuit conforms with the Islamic core values. Islam teaches its followers to protect the benefits of all stakeholders, which is a win-win situation for all parties involved as guided by maqasid shariah (Rahman et al., 2014). According to Ibn ‘Ashur (as cited in Bakar, 2021), maqasid shariah refers to activities that benefit the stakeholders and prevent harm ( mudharat ) and evil to humans.
