Illegal Meat Cartel At the end of 2020, Malaysia was shocked by the news of 1,500 tons of illegal meat cartel syndicate from foreign countries which are China, Ukraine, Brazil and Argentina. This news was viral on social media and opened the eyes of Malaysians that this criminal has been established in Malaysia for many years. This issue related the safety of imported meat, Halal supply chain integrity, illegal slaughterhouses and non-halal meat processing. separated from any other food that does not meet the definitions stated in the items above, or any other things decreed as Najis by Islamic law. Issues 1. CadburyCrisis On 23rd May 2014, a controversy crisis was occurred when a laboratary test leaked, two Cadbury Dairy Milk products contained porcine DNA (Musa, Muslim, Omar & Husin, 2016). Malaysia Ministry of Health confirmed the issue and JAKIM immediately suspended the Halal certification of the two products of Cadbury and took samples for investigation on the second day (Rahmah, 2014). Cadbury recall the affected products and would conduct full review of product line to ensure safety and quality standards of two Cadbury’s products (Rahim & Ali, 2017). Due to this issue went viral on social media, some Muslims called for boycott of Cadbury products and several NGOs were considering to take a joint lawsuit against Cadbury (Kasirye & Kreya, 2020). The government through Ministry of Health, Ministry of Standards, Ministry of Agriculture and others departments try to solve the public misunderstanding by held the press conferences but failed (Rahim & Ali, 2017). The Health Ministry said the issue of Halal certification handled by JAKIM. Mondelez international lost about $37 million in 10 days due to this issue (Jaques, 2015). Cadbury Malaysia issued a carefully public relations statement and give good cooperation with Malaysia authorities to halal supervision (Kasirye & Kreya, 2020). However, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) has denied the viral news on contamination of pork, horses and kangaroos were found. This issue showed the weaknesses of the authorities in ensuring the integrity of halal food in Malaysia. JAKIM and KPDNHEP still monitor and audit the meat- based business to prevent this same issue repeat. In conclusion, this issue give awareness on safety and sensitivity of Muslim consumers. Also, makes Malaysians more cautious in making food choices derived from imported meat-based products. The imported meat traders also affected due to decline of sales.
