ABSTRACT COMPILATION - EduGC 2025
29 / 87 ABSTRACT: Overview In Malaysia, the rise of digital connectivity has been accompanied by a surge in online scams, with thousands falling victim each year to fraudulent schemes, causing significant financial and emotional distress. This educational Minecraft game aims at raising scam awareness among university students (aged 18-24) leveraging their affinity for gaming to achieve educational goals, focusing on investment scams. Upon entering Scamville world, players find themselves in the Ginkōken Dojo ( Bank Sword Dojo ), where they must undergo trials to become Scamurai warriors trained to detect investment scams. Problem Statement Scams in the digital age present significant risks to young adults, who, despite being digitally savvy and having access to online tools, often struggle to distinguish between legitimate opportunities and fraudulent schemes. University students in Malaysia are increasingly targeted by scams, including investment scams (Tee, 2021). Cases include a Sibu student losing over RM100,000 to a bogus investment scheme (The Star, 2025). Learning Objectives Upon completion of playing the educational game, learners will be able to: 1. Detect red flags in common investment scams through simulated dialogue. 2. Analyse and compare scam vs. legit investment features. 3. Apply the 10 Scamurai rules to decision-making in simulated encounters. 4. Succeed in a knowledge-based duel to earn Scamurai Ranking. Core Features In this game, we use the sandbox environment of Minecraft to mimic real-world situations where scams usually happen, enabling players to safely investigate, spot, and avoid fraudulent schemes. The game will incorporate scenario-based quests, where players interact with NPCs (non-player characters) and solve challenges related to spotting scams, assessing risks, and making informed decisions. Ultimately, the educational Minecraft game reimagines scam awareness learning, fostering crucial life skills through play while creating a safe space to prepare students for the challenges of the real world.
